Equipment Needed

Required Player Equipment

While ball hockey isn’t a full-contact sport, it is fast-paced and safety is a priority for us. Players must have all required equipment to be able to play in a game or practice.

All non-goalie players are required to have the following:
  • CSA-approved helmet with full face protection and a chin strap.
  • Hockey gloves (no lacrosse gloves).
  • Protective cup (Jack or Jill).
  • Soccer-style shin pads (soft or hard plastic) with long socks or pants covering the shin pads. Some players choose to use "D-gel” style pads, which are an all-in-one soft shin guard and knee pad. These do not require socks or pants covering them.
  • Supportive running shoes appropriate for high-intensity activity with rapid starts and stops (no “skater” shoes).
  • Hockey stick with a wood or composite blade (no plastic blades).
While not mandatory, we also recommend:
  • Soft elbow pads (Must by covered up by long sleeves, and no ice hockey elbow pads).
  • Soft knee pads (no ice hockey shin/knee pads).
All goalies are required to have the following:
  • CSA-approved helmet with full face protection (cage) and a chin strap, or a CSA-approved goalie mask (note that many street hockey goalie masks are not CSA standard).
  • Appropriately sized goalie pads. These can be ice or ball hockey grade pads.
  • Goalie glove and blocker. These can be ice or ball hockey grade.
  • Ice-hockey-grade chest protector
  • Ice-hockey-grade padded goalie pants.
  • Protective cup (Jack or Jill).
  • Goalie stick with a wood or composite blade (no plastic blades).

Because we know the cost of goalie equipment can be significantly higher than for other players, the league has an extensive supply of goalie equipment we can loan to goalies for the season. Your coach will coordinate access to goalie equipment, or you can contact our league equipment manager by email at equipmentmanager@victoriavipers.ca
